Dramatic eye makeup tips

Artfully applying eyeshadow to magically transform your eyes into pools of luminescent beauty is a lot of fun.

(It is also a lot of fun to read that last sentence out aloud, go on try it!)

Your eyes are the windows to your soul and it's a joy to frame them with the colours of nature. It is very satisfying to play with different colours, using dark here, light there to change the shape and the look of your eyes.

Step 1.

Apply a small amount of liquid foundation to both eyelids using your fingers. This provides a base that reveals the eye shadow's true colour. It also gives the eye shadow something to cling onto and prevents it slipping.

Step 2.

Dip a brush into a light eyeshadow (tapping off any excess) then sweep over the area from the socket line of your eyelid to just below the eyebrow.

Step 3.

Dip a brush into a medium shade (tapping off any excess) then applying eye shadow over both eyelids and into the socket line, blending with the brush.

Step 4.

Finally, add the darkest shade. Apply at the outer corners of the eyes, above the upper lash line and into the socket line. Then carefully dust a little along the lower lash lines at the outer corners to create a V shape.

Stunning eyeshadow colours for women over 50

Never before have we had the opportunity of applying eyeshadow from such a large range of dazzlingly beautiful eyeshadow colors.

Choosing the best eyeshadow colours can be quite daunting to some, and we also need to look at whether glitter and shimmer flatters our 'older girl' eyes.

One way to always look sensational is to master Smokey Eye makeup.

Experiment bravely with colour

We are spoilt for choice in colors when applying eyeshadow, so whilst electric blue and violent violet colours may not be quite right, experiment bravely with colour.

Beige and neutral colours have their place but you do not need to limit yourselves to them.

Find out what suits you, the unique you.

If you have grey hair, you may wish to use only the light, neutral shades of brown, taupe, soft blues and purples. Achieve more intensity in your eyes with the subtle use of black, charcoal or steel gray.

For precise application, use a good makeup brush or the tip of your little finger. Of all your fingers, the little finger applies the least pressure to your skin in the delicate eye area.

Some say that ‘mature women’ should not wear shimmering eyeshadow.

The good news is that it is now okay for us to wear shimmer eyeshadow because the new formulas are refined and do not crease and accentuate lines. Yay!

You will love applying eyeshadow in shimmering colours as they make your eyes look bigger and brighter.

Try them and see if shimmer works for you too.

'just in case' cosmetics

Do you have a little box of ‘just in case’ cosmetics? Okay, okay, me too.

This is a box full of makeup you could not bear to give away or throw away. After all, some of it you've only worn once! Like that yellow eyeshadow, which makes your eyes look dull, but you might need it one day. This is not a clever strategy as all makeup has a use-by-date.

The following guidelines are estimates:

Eyeshadow - Will last up to 3 years.

Top Tip: A dark eyeshadow can double as eyeliner. In fact, many makeup artists swear by using eyeshadow as eyeliner.

Eye Liner - Will last up to 3 years. Should be sharpened regularly as this helps stop the spread of infection.

Brushes - Wash every 2-3 months in a mild detergent.

Mascara - This product expires the fastest. Throw out after 4 months.

Top Tip: If you don't want your mascara to expire faster than its use-by-date, don't pump the wand in and out. Doing that exposes the product to drying air.
