How can one decide which really is the best mascara?

Let's start with some mascara history.

Who Invented Mascara?

The word 'mascara' derives from the Italian 'maschera' - which means mask - from Middle Latin 'masca' or Old Occitan 'masco'.

The first non-toxic mascara product was invented by Eugene Rimmel in the 19th Century and became so popular that the word 'rimmel' is the word for mascara in several languages including French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

Flash forward to the 20th century (1913) where a young chemist named T.L. Williams noticed his younger sister applying a mixture of Vaseline and coal dust to her eyelashes to give them a darker, fuller look. He adapted it in his small laboratory and produced a product sold locally called Lash-Brow-Ine.

The product was a local hit, but the awkward name held it back. His sister, who inspired the product, was named Maybel. So T.L. Williams re-named it Maybelline, a combination of Maybel and Vaseline. It is under this name that Maybelline has achieved its now legendary status in the field of cosmetics. In 1917 the company produced Maybelline Cake Mascara.

How to Apply Mascara

The best mascara color for many women is black. If you are a woman who likes a more natural look then a dark brown or brown mascara is the color for you.

A stunning color to try for an elegant and different look is purple mascara. Try it, you'll be glad you did.

The technique of how to apply mascara is this simple:

Using your brush wand, darken each eyelash from the base to the tip on both top and bottom lashes. I prefer to darken top and bottom lashes but you might like the effect of darkening your top lashes only.

How does one apply mascara without getting it on the skin around the eyes?

Simply rest your little finger against your chin (underneath your cheek) for support and move the tip of the brush horizontally, you will find you can coat each eyelash more evenly and diminish the chances of getting mascara where you don't want it.

My lashes are not thick and luxuriant so I need three coats ... I know :(

For me to achieve that 'luxuriant look' I need to apply another coat before the previous coat dries. Some make-up artists say it is best for each coat to dry before you apply the next coat. Find out what works for you.

That spiky, stuck-together look is not the look you want so brush through your lashes (upward and outward) with a mascara brush after you have finished applying your mascara. Remember you are using mascara to colour each eyelash darker, not to create new lashes.

Best Curling Mascara

Don't rely on your mascara for this, use an eyelash curler.

Many women clamp the curler on their lashes, holding it closed for a minute or so.

For a much better result, place the curler at the bottom of the lashes and make several firm squeezes. Relax the pressure between squeezes but don't change the position of the curler. This will curve the top eyelashes up and out, beautifully opening your eyes for the world to admire. Using the best mascara tips above apply your mascara then accept the raves.

Tip For amazing eyelashes, try using a curling mascara and then a lengthening mascara. Maybelline's Lashblast Fusion mascara combines them for you.

Best Lengthening Mascara

This really is all about what works for you. The best lengthening mascara for me is, without a doubt, Mac Mascara. Not only does Mac Mascara make my lashes look longer, it never smudges below my eyes, unlike others I have tried.

And this is not about price either, Mac are reasonably priced considering their quality, colours and frequent release of new, stunning products. Even higher-priced mascaras have resulted in that moment of looking in the mirror to find those most unattractive black smudges under my eyes.

So my best mascara is Mac but if I couldn't get a Mac Mascara, my next choice would be Lancome Hypnose Volume Mascara.

Another favourite would be any of the CoverGirl XXL mascara .

The question "What is the best mascara?" can only be answered by you because your eyelash needs are unique to you.

I never use waterproof mascara as I believe the mascara ingredients are harmful enough with having to use even more chemicals to get them off! Find out what those mascara ingredients are here.

For safety and health reasons, mascaras should be discarded three months after opening, especially if the color or smell changes. A mascara brush is made of plastic and should never be shared.
